![]() Historical use of a term can influence meanings and be passed down by those wishing to illustrate ideas with the best word or phrase available to them. This is particularly true when the words we use today have been derived from symbols, in this case, Japanese kanji, which represent ideas rather than literal translations of the components. However, care must be taken about the absolute meanings of words when discussing concepts derived from other cultures and expressed in different languages. Thus aiki's meaning is to fit, join, or combine energy. Hence, ki symbolizes energy (in the body). The kanji for ki represents a pot filled with steaming rice and a lid on it. Aiki should not be confused with wa which refers to harmony. Hence, ai symbolizes things coming together, merging. The kanji for ai is made of three radicals, "join", "one" and "mouth". In Japanese Aiki is formed from two kanji: When applied, the aiki practitioner controls the actions of the attacker with minimal effort and with a distinct absence of muscular tension usually associated with physical effort. No claims of superiority, just loads of honest curiosity and a willingness to have all of our assumptions and preconceptions shattered.Aiki, a Japanese budō term, at its most basic is a principle that allows a conditioned practitioner to negate or redirect an opponent's power. For three days we’d train and ask questions and then train and ask questions some more. A particularly thick-skulled judoka who was sure he’d seen pretty much all there was to see in Japan got schooled in just how limited his experience really was. Lots of people from all sorts of arts developed an interest in jodo. I saw sword people conclude that some of those “dinky” weapons weren’t so silly after all. I saw experienced aikidoka go from thinking they knew something about swords to deciding that they really needed to take up a sword art. Afterwards we’d all go out for dinner and quiz each other about everything we’d seen and try to get answers to some of the million or so questions that leapt into our minds while we were trying all of this new stuff. In one weekend I got to do jujutsu and naginata, a couple of styles of iai, maybe some jutte or spear, and a little kyudo. He invited all sorts of senior teachers from various koryu to Guelph, and we’d each teach a 2 hour introduction to some aspect of our art. Kim Taylor used to host the best cross-training event I’ve ever been to. Just doing something outside your specialty can open your eyes and clear out myths. They enjoy my attempts to counter attack in the middle of their techniques, and the challenge of finding ways to stop me. Since then I’ve gotten to know some great aikidoka with exposure to judo. That’s not a problem with aikido, it’s a problem with training. I didn’t know about that assumption, so I surprised quite a few people when I counter attacked while being thrown or even as I was being slammed into the mat. Many people in aikido assumed that once uke was off balance and being thrown, the action was over. That became interesting for me when I started training with aikidoka from time to time. It’s over when both people agree it’s over, especially in dojo randori where you’re not competing for points. For example, we don’t make an assumption about when the fight is over. ![]() Judoka make all sorts of assumptions for training purposes that are silly outside the dojo but are perfectly reasonable from the perspective of making regular training safe. Action must be appropriate to the situation.Ī little cross training can open up whole vistas of realizations. Right, you move when uchitachi has committed to the thrust and youĭeflect the sword tip just enough to miss but not so far that the sword canĬome in through a new opening. Overreact you block the thrust but leave yourself open to a number of follow-upĪttacks that flow smoothly from your excess movement. When uchitachi thrustsĭuring Sakan, if you don’t act you will be stabbed in the gut. Where overreacting is nearly as bad as failing to act. Where action is essential to not getting hit in the head with a weapon, but I can think of many kata in Shinto Muso Ryu Lessons about moving enough, but not too much, emphasize the need to respondĪppropriately to whatever happens. Learning this is solid preparation for life outside the dojo. ![]() Just how narrow the difference between success and failure, life and death, Whack that would be deadly with live weapons. Most koryu budo kataĪre paired, and being off just a little for either person can result in a nasty We stare death in the face with every kata we practice. Budo reminds us, every practice, of our limits.

They call again about 10 times in the span of and hour but I didn't answer. I say "I know who this is" and she pauses and nervously says "What are you talking about this is Tiffany and Georgina?" I say "Y'all can't hide, I got insiders" and I hang up. 10 min later they call back and I'm pretty sure it was S on the phone this time. ![]() So I text a friend and ask if he seen any of them on snapchat hanging out (this is how I found out it was them last time) and he says yes they are all spending the night with each other tonight. And if they wanted to pull the whole "Tiffany and Georgina" thing again why didn't she just have S or R talk? Which confused me because shouldn't she think that I would recognize her voice? Even though I didn't which I think is funny but her voice is a little off on the phone anyways. After that call I realized that was actually my ex, J, on the phone. After a pause she says "its Tiffany" with a small giggle and I immediately laugh and hang up because I'm not about to play that game again. The convo goes on and I ask her what her name is. I say "Who the **** is this" and she says "You don't recognize my voice? I was in your class". A girl says hey two times then says "Hey is this (my name)?". I don't say hello so I let this unknown person talk first. It is now July and I get a call from "Unknown". The whole conversation was basically them hating on J trying to see if I would say anything bad about her I guess. They pretended to be "Tiffany and Georgina" and claimed they had every class with me. I didn't know it was them because I didn't have their numbers but I kinda recognized their voices. ![]() Long story short J was silent and S and R were the ones talking. I guess they got bored and decided to prank call me. So about a month or so after the break up, J S and R were all having a sleepover. And maybe make a crab that has special powers that make him a trail to the next baby crab. I think you should probably make them free, if not then do something like add special jumps or attacks like Noodles can shoot out confetti that makes all the enemies around him explode or get hurt and Arnold can have something like rocket boosters that allow him to kind of fast forward through the level. There are different crabs you can buy like Arnold and Fury, but why do you exactly need them? I know because they look different but also why do you buy them then? If they don’t really do anything different why are you asking money for them. ![]() Sweetest Purse, Clutch, Carry-all, Pencil case, or Toiletries bag ever Yep. Safety bias holds back healthy forms of risk-taking. In other words, bad is stronger than good. Many studies have shown that we’d prefer not losing money over gaining money. Safety bias refers to the all-too-human tendency to avoid loss. Safety bias – We protect against loss more than we seek out gain We can mitigate distance bias with systems that acknowledge important figures outside our immediate proximity, such as calling on remote colleagues first in a meeting before discussing with the room. This type of bias reflects our instinct to prioritize what’s nearby, whether in physical space or time. It emerges in meetings when folks in the room fail to gather input from their remote colleagues calling in on a video platform. Distance bias – We prefer what’s close over what’s far awayĭistance bias has become all too common in today’s hybrid world. To counteract this bias, we need to build systems for others to check our thinking, share their perspectives, and help us reframe the situation at hand. We assume our view of a given problem or situation constitutes the whole truth. Experience bias occurs when we fail to remember that fact. We may be the stars of our own show, but other people see the world differently than we do. Experience bias – We take our own perception to be the objective truth The fix is to develop a step-by-step process that makes it easy to gather more information. A downside of that is the tendency to rush to judgment without fully considering all the facts.Įxpedience bias crops up when we judge employees’ performance based solely on one data point or recommendation. Humans have an innate need for certainty - to know what’s going on. Expedience bias – We prefer to act quickly ![]() ![]() Overcoming a similarity bias requires actively finding common ground with people who appear different. Hence, managers tend to hire employees who remind them of themselves. We generally have a favorable view of our in-group but a skeptical or negative view of the out-group. We instinctively create “in-groups” and “out-groups” - boundaries between those we consider close to us and others who live on the margins. It occurs because humans are highly motivated to see themselves and those who are similar in a favorable light. Similarity bias most commonly influences our decisions regarding people: who to hire, who to promote, and who to assign to projects. Similarity bias – We prefer what’s like us over what’s different We’ve outlined each of the five bias domains below. These five domains comprise The SEEDS Model®, the framework that underpins our solutions for reducing unconscious bias. Scientists have explored more than 150 such biases, which we’ve organized into five categories. ![]() That’s why we’ve unpacked these shortcuts to help leaders and teams mitigate the biases that negatively affect decision-making. If we’re in a burning building, it might be lifesaving, but if we’re conducting a performance review, it might cause us to make a mistake. For instance, an expedience bias compels us to make decisions quickly. They help us in certain cases and hinder us in others. To brain scientists, these shortcuts are known as “biases.” They’re neither good nor bad they just are. To save time and energy, our brains don’t give each decision equal attention. Humans make thousands of decisions every day. |
